Statement of Purpose
My aspiration to enroll in sport management started after I graduated from high school. Nevertheless, compared to the US, Taiwan does not have as huge market in programs offered in this sport specialization. Therefore, I had set a goal to study my master degree in sport management in the U.S.A. To start off, I carefully considered the current trends of information technology in every industry and the importance on cultivating knowledge in management when selecting my major in university. As a result, I studied in the department of Information Management at Tamkang University.
As a child with my vigorous energy, I practiced many sports such as basketball, baseball and golf. Therefore, I followed sports related news and activities and desired to learn the strategies of efficient marketing on sport events, the standard operation procedure of activities, and the management of organization. While attending university, I took opportunities in my part time employment or extracurricular activities to participate in sport related works or events. I worked part time in Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) to offer myself a chance to learn relevant knowledge and obtain useful experiences. Although my duty was mainly to maintain the environment of the field and did not have occasion to work with internal management, this employment led me to understand that the distribution of work is essential to form a professional sport industry. The upper management from the president of a club to a league and even the captain and the players are all integrated, inseparable and interconnected. To strengthen and to make a professional league successful, everyone must collaborate efficiently. During my service there, I saw the development of a league which led me to discover my passion, as well as to further confirm my continuation of studying in sport management.
I learned that sport is not simply an action and movement. It needs efficient management and a vertical integration from top to bottom. The decision maker must have courage and insight and possess excellent leadership skills to offer concrete direction to executors who must perform effectively and efficiently, and the rest of employers would therefore strive to accomplish the common goal. The success of an event relies heavily on the organization and assignment of the team work. Having participated in this activity, my experience has enhanced and I placed more confidence in my goal.
Since my major in university was unrelated to the sport field and if I would like to pursue a future career in the sport industry, I am in need of furthering my studies in the field. Your school offers a curriculum that I would be able to learn in-depth about sport management, economic, marketing, norms and even the mental establishment and education of athletes. I believe that your curriculum would develop my skills and abilities in the sport industry; therefore, I hope to enroll in the master program at your school. The followings are my future study objectives:
- To learn the function of sport management
Even though I participated or worked in many sport related activities or employment, the market is still rather limited in Taiwan. Hence, I expect to be trained in the flourishing market of the U.S.A by the talented professionals in order to deepen knowledge in the sport field.
- To learn how to be a good manager and an outstanding leader
With my existing experiences in sport events and part time jobs, I noticed that to coordinate from top to bottom is not easy. It is necessary to work with people from different domains, to communicate with people having different opinions and to make important decisions effectively. The curriculum in your school such as Leadership Management would help me to gain leadership skills and allow me to learn to be a competent leader, which are deemed essential for my future career development and professional success.
After graduating, I expect to return to my country to help the development of the sport industry, to improve the international status, to coordinate with other countries having thriving sport industry and to add new drive to the sport industry in my country!
