A Passion for People: The Unconventional and Innovative Business Success of Bill Veeck

I played baseball in high school and baseball is also the most popular sport in my country, Taiwan, we rank fourth in the world now. If you have been watched lots of international baseball games but never heard about “Taiwan” that’s because some political factors so we have to use another name, “Chinese Taipei”, instead of “Taiwan”. Taiwan has a professional baseball league called CPBL (Chinese Professional Baseball League) which was established in 1989. In 1997, the newly founded TML (Taiwan Major League) began to compete with the CPBL. The two leagues were often competing with each other, but eventually, the TML merged with the CPBL in 2003. Baseball was nearly dead in Taiwan after a major game-fixing scandal during 2009. This was not first time, it has happened 3 times before. Fans grew tired of it and stopped attending games, owners grew tired of it and started disbanding their teams. We had only 6 teams before this scandal happened in 2009, after this 2 teams decided to disband so we only had 4 teams now. In 2013, Taiwan made a great run in World Baseball Classic which brought back the fans. An average of 6,000 people attended the 240 regular season games from March through September this year, triple the figure from 2012. In that year, the well-known baseball player Manny Ramirez played half season in Taiwan is also one of the reasons that brought back the attendance. By 2019, the league plans to add two teams, bringing the total to six, which said is the right number for Taiwan’s population of 23 million. Since baseball is my favorite sport, I hope Taiwan’s baseball can have a good development in the future. That’s why I want to major in sports management, after graduating, I expect to return to my country to help the development of the sport industry, especially baseball.
